A DAY WITH SELNEC

A film about the work of SELNEC (South East Lancashire and North East Cheshire Passenger Transport Authority), and its provision of bus and rail services in the area. Shots include buses in suburban streets, views of Salford, Brooklands train station, and people boarding trains and buses. Training scenes include bus drivers in a classroom, a bus undergoing tests on a skid pan, and a driver training session on the road. There are numerous scenes in and around Piccadilly bus station, and Piccadilly Gardens, plus shots of the airport and scenes shot at night. There are also views of Piccadilly train station and footage taken of, and from, trains in that area.

They spend time on these trips hillwalking, scrambling up mountains, swimming in lakes and the sea, camping and cooking. The film concludes with scenes of the boys fishing on a lake with Arnold Ellis in view.

They explore the local countryside and follow a preset orienteering course to checkpoints, where they stop for refreshments. There are shots of the local countryside, farm animals, and wildlife. Some of the children wear cubs, scouts and brownie uniforms. At the end of the course, the teachers and children disperse.

They play table football and a girl puts on her new Donny Osmond record, 'Too Young'. There are scenes from a family holiday to Tenby, we see the family picnicking, relaxing and playing on the beach. They visit gift shops in the town and go on a trip to Caldey Island. We see them outside the Giltar Hotel. We then see brief scenes from inside a workplace, John McCann & Sons.

PSYCHIATRY FOR THE DEAF

Looks at the development of communication skills with profoundly deaf patients at the Department of Psychiatry for the Deaf at Whittingham Hospital near Preston. Gives assessments of various problems affecting individual patients, many of which have been caused by long-term misdiagnosis, and shows the kinds of treatment they receive at the hospital - including individual and group therapy. Includes footage of staff receiving sign language lessons and other training to aid their work with the patients.
