Journalist Ray Gosling takes an idiosyncratic look at life in Whittingham psychiatric hospital, near Preston, opened in 1873 as the Fourth Lancashire County Lunatic Asylum. Though critical of much of what he discovers, he is sympathetic to the patients, and several of them talk at length about their lives and experiences. Filming locations include hospital wards, the kitchen, laundry, and hairdressers; patients are also seen at the hospital farm, and undergoing industrial therapy, producing goods to be sold in high street shops.
