ROVING REPORT NO. 1 [AND MISCELLANY]

A countryside fair is viewed from a helicopter, which lands. Cars park, people wander around stalls, and a flower competition, and families picnic. A brass band plays, machinery, marching and gun demonstrations occur. At Manchester and Liverpool canal, boats and dinghys sail. Mr Earnshaw is interviewed prior to his long-distance rowing attempt (South Africa to UK), and men are seen putting his boat, called the "Evening Star," into the canal. Boats take part in an obstacle course. At Tolpuddle people gather at The Martyrs' Inn and take part in the annual parade. A band marches and many people hold signs. There are shots of countryside and the skyline in different weather, a village market occurs. At Brimhay nursery school children play inside and out, have lessons and go swimming. There are scenes of penguins and birds in an aviary, Spittal hotel, Glenshee ski school, men shearing sheep, a ferry, and lobster fishing. Women garden, play golf, and put up a tent. People walk at night with lit torches. Cars from the early 1900s take part in a procession, a crowd watches.

Celebrations for Brenda's 21st birthday which is quite formal with some underexposed dancing. Holiday/leisure scenes out and about in the countryside and at the coast. A carnival parade is followed by people in a garden then beach scenes on a cold day, possibly the Fylde coast. Model boats on a lake and a boat trip followed by waves crashing against some rocks and people climbing over the rocks

Scenes from a Cornish holiday. A heliport and a helicopter taking off. Views of boats and the harbour at Penzance (?). A mother and her two boys on the beach. The boys are later seen riding on a model railway. General waterside holiday scenes - playing with inflatable hoops, paddle boats and rubber dingys. The two boys are seen blowing bubbles. Final scenes at a cattle market - cows, sheep, pigs in pens.

The film opens with scenes from Margaret Shepherd's wedding. People stand around, photographs are taken, and confetti is thrown. We then see scenes from the reception. Scenes from Southport follow. People ride on a miniature railway ride, and we see other fairground rides.
 
 
 
[BURNAGE HIGH SCHOOL - LAB RULES]

This film opens with shots of the blackboard in a school science laboratory. There are science lab rules written on the blackboard, which appear between comedy scenes of school boys sneaking into the lab and breaking those rules and causing chaos. A boy burns his finger in acid and another boy starts a fire and there are other scenes of things going wrong. This is followed by scenes of a lesson taking place, and then an experiment taking place outside. The film ends with a list of the boys who took part in producing the film.
 
 
 
BURNAGE HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS - THE FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL

The film opens with shots of Burnage High School and children playing in the playground. We see scenes from a boy's first day at school. His mother waves him off as he leaves home and then we see him arrive at school and meet his friends at the gate. We later see him leaving school and making his way home. There are scenes of various sports taking place in the school, including running races, athletics, cricket, tennis and basketball. We see students doing cartwheels in a gym lesson and taking part in an art lesson. We also see the students having lunch in the canteen.

A variety of scenes from various locations. We see shots of country lanes, street signs, and general views around Merseyside and Cheshire. Locations include Trentham Gardens, Chester Zoo, Hale, Thelwall, Rainhill, Runcorn and Prescot. There are Scottish scenes from an Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh train tour of the Wester Ross area of the Scottish Highlands. We see lots of spectacular scenery shot from the window of the moving train, and there are shots of the train too. We also see scenes from Bridgenorth of the Severn Valley Railway, and of the funicular at Cliff Railway Station. The film ends with scenes of remedial work on Ironbridge and scenes from Blists Hill Open Air Museum.

This appears to be a Pace Egg Play. People in Medieval costume put on an informal performance in the street, and there is mock combat and sword fighting. There are spectators and the children are involved in the performance. One of the performers carries a basket of eggs.

Tugboats pull a submarine in Walney Channel in Barrow which is followed by garden scenes, views of an airport [Manchester?] and a boat trip on Lake Windermere

Brief views of the ruins of a temple at Negev in Israel in 1971 are followed by scenes shot in the United States during a family holiday including Central Park and a boat excursion around New York, the Arlington Cemetery in Washington DC and Niagara Falls. Film-maker's baby grandson, Robert Angel, is seen in various locations throughout.
 
 
 
HAND MADE PAPER

A look at the practice of hand paper making at the Hayle Mill near Maidstone, where traditional methods are still used to mix pulp and form cotton sheets. The wads of paper are seen being rolled smooth and the finished paper is packaged ready for dispatch.

Opens with scenes of St Mark's Church Cheetham Hill's Whit Walk in 1969. Also features footage shot on a late 1960s housing estate in Cheetham Hill which is now demolished. Children are seen in the summer and then the winter, playing in snow, as are a group of young men. Continues with footage from a children's Christmas party, and of a group of elderly people aboard a boat on the Manchester Ship Canal. The filmmaker's wife is seen walking in the Croal - Irwell valley and later in a park. Features further shots of children playing, and footage of St Mark's Church's 1973 Whit Walk.

Footage of several members of the Hanna family as they celebrate Christmas and visit Kent. Family members fool around for the camera and eat Christmas tea, and there are shots of individual children. The film cuts to games and activity in the garden of Walsh Manor in East Sussex, where family members play cricket, hold a rabbit, use a space hopper and try out a new frame tent. There are shots of the interior of the house and of two children dressed up. Also includes visits to a zoo, and to Knole Gardens and Hever Castle in Kent.
