extraordinary city in the turbulent times of the the
twentieth century. Please note we will not be providing a

video provides a fascinatiing insight into the
first one hundred years of the Manchester Ship
Canal. Colour footage and black and white film from
as early as 1912 shows the Canal at work. See the
construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Dock at
Eastham, and go behind the scenes of the Dock
Office in 1967.

Titan buses and rare glimpses, in colour, of 1930s
Lytham and Blackpool trams.

early fairground bioscope shows and the local
bughuts to the luxurious picture palaces of the
1930s and the sad fate of many cinemas since 1950s
- is told in 180 photographs. The cinemas, their
staff, the publicity stunts used to attract
audiences, the films made showing local working
people, local stars and performers, the rivalry of
television - are all inside The Picture
House.
