Student documentary in which former residents of Hankinson Park in Salford, made famous by Walter Greenwood's novel 'Love on the Dole', talk about their fond memories of the area. They describe how it has changed since the slum clearances and the erection of flats and tower blocks. Illustrated with archive photographs and film of the old 'Hanky Park', its demolition and rebuilding. Also includes images of the replacement buildings, many of which are now themselves in need of repair, as contributors bemoan the deterioration of the area and call for new investment. Concludes with Emma Heesom, press officer for the National Blood Service, who describes the work of the NBS alongside images of the blood donation procedure. A surprise 60th birthday party. Family and friends are gathered in a room decorated with 60th birthday balloons. A DJ plays music and the party guests are recorded sending their birthday wishes. The man who the party is being held for makes his entrance and is overwhelmed by the surprise. He later cuts the cake and various family members take it in turns to feed him a bit. It is also the birthday of one of the guests at the party, he is presented with a cake and the family feed him bits of cake. Back home after the party, the daughters and niece (Sangeeta Dubb who was behind the camera at the party) of the man celebrating his 60th birthday record a birthday message. It is nearly 3am, they share a bottle of champagne and they are quite giddy.

[EMILY AND RACHEL]

Leach family scenes focusing on their daughters, Emily and Rachel. We begin with scenes from the summer of 2004, where we see the girls at a Sea Life Centre, looking at stingrays and sea lions. We then see the family having a ride on a miniature railway. This is followed by scenes from Whitby. The family play on the beach, visit Whitby Abbey and walk along the pier. We also see them at their campsite where Rachel and her mum play a ball game. Back at home the girls play in the garden, sliding down a toy slide into their paddling pool. In November there is small family gathering for Dad's birthday, they have a cake and then fireworks in the back garden. The next day we see the girls playing in the living room. We then have Christmas scenes in December. We see two nativity plays, one featuring Rachel and the second featuring Emily. The family then take a ride on the East Lancashire Railway Santa Train. We see the family on the train where there is entertainment and Santa hands out gifts to the children. On Christmas Eve the girls hang up their stockings, leave a carrot for Rudolph and a mince pie for Santa. They also sprinkle glitter on the doorstep to help guide Rudolph in. On Christmas day the girls open their presents. In early January we see a small family gathering for Emily's birthday, followed by a children's party at a soft play centre.

Philip and Elizabeth Cherian describe their childhood in Singapore and explain how their father was imprisoned there by the Japanese during World War II. Includes extracts of archival footage featuring the state of Kerala in India and Changi village in Singapore.
 
 
 
ROYTON LIVES THROUGH THE AGES

A report on archaeological excavations at the site of Royton Hall, Oldham, beginning with a brief look at the town, then revealing the history of the hall using old prints, maps and photographs. On the excavation site, as community volunteers painstakingly dig and investigate the uncovered walls and foundations, Adam Thompson from the Manchester University Archaeological Unit discusses their findings, and Doug Ashmore from Royton Local History Society talks about the site. There is a brief segment of broadcast footage from BBC North West Tonight with a live report on the dig, and an open weekend is held for members of the public before the site is re-covered for safety, with the hope of further excavations in the future.
