PLATE GLASS

The manufacture of plate glass. The raw materials are loaded into a revolving hopper and mixed; this powder is loaded into a clay pot and placed in a furnace to fuse it. Next, the clay pot is positioned over the rolling machine and the molten glass is poured in. It then flows down onto a casting table, which moves over to an annealing kiln; after annealing the glass is cut into more manageable pieces and trimmed, ground and polished; long sequences of grinding and polishing machines in action. The large plates of glass are checked for faults, and marked for cutting. Close shot of a piece of glass having its edges nipped off until the circular outline marked on it is reached. Plates seen being packed in crates. Shots of lorries and a train taking the glass out from the City Road works.

A fictional film, shot in Salford. A family seen at breakfast and teatime; they wonder if they have won a competition in the local paper. The mother sits down to rest; the remainder of the film is her dream. The father announces they have won the competition. They go to Blackpool; scenes of all the attractions at Blackpool. But disasters happen to each member of the family; the daughter is abandoned miles away by a man who picked her up, the father gets in a fight in a pub, and the brother falls off the Big Dipper. The mother is relieved when she wakes up and is told that they did not win the competition.
 
 
 
MISS GRACIE FIELDS' CHARITY WEEK FOR ROCHDALE MARCH 1933

A film showing the wards and facilities at Bolton Royal Infirmary to encourage residents to join the Contributory Scheme in the Jubilee Year. Scenes include mill workers paying their weekly contributions, and a District Nurse on her bicycle; the Hospital Saturday Committee and the kitchens.

Lord Derby also formally opened the new Town Hall in Stretford. Very good shots of local businesses and processes.

Lord Derby performs the opening ceremony at Stretford Town Hall. He attends a luncheon, at which formal presentations are made by both individuals and companies. A procession to Longford Park is featured - Lord Derby presents the Charter of Incorporation, which is then blessed by the Bishop of Manchester. The day ends with a firework display. Footage of Stockport Carnival held on July 15th 1933. The street procession comprised of Morris Dancing troupes, jazz bands, decorated floats, mounted police and acrobats. Competitors wearing various fancy dress costumes are seen wet and bedraggled after a torrential downpour. Further footage also includes the crowning ceremony of the Carnival Queen, performed by Mrs. Gill, Mayoress of Stockport.
