Scale model experiments carried out in the engineering department of Marischal College, University of Aberdeen, to study the effect on the flow of water passing into Manchester and Salford Docks by the proposed widening of the River Irwell. Dye is injected into the model and its course followed, with flows of 10,000 15,000 and 20,000 cubic feet per second.

Three installations designed, manufactured and installed by Richard Sutcliffe Ltd. of Horbury, Wakefield. Installation 1: Pease & Partners Normanby Iron Works - iron ore is discharged by grab and moved by conveyor. Installation 2: The Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers - bags of cement are transported by conveyor from the packing machine to the loading bay. Installation 3: The construction of the Eastham oil dock by Sir Alfred McAlpine - conveyors are used to move spoil to dumping grounds.

[PRESTON GUILD STREET SCENES 1952]

Film documenting many of the events that took place during the Preston Guild of 1952. Views of the many decorated streets in the town are followed by the Mayor's proclamation and the arrival of the Preston Harriers running club with the Guild Emblem. A veteran car rally passes through the streets, and there are scenes from all of the Guild processions including the Church of England, Roman Catholic and Trades processions. A foundation stone is laid at Preston Royal Infirmary, and there are scenes from the Royal Lancashire Show, a football match between Preston North End and the Swiss team Servette, and the Schools Guild Festival in Avenham Park in which 6000 local children participated. The film ends with the Ceremony of Adoption of the Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire) by the people of Preston, and a thanksgiving service at the Parish Church. [The preservation of this film was funded by a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.]
