POST CROWN IMPRESSION TECHNIQUE DIRECT WAX PATTERN

Instructional film aimed at student dentists demonstrating a technique to produced a new false crown or tooth using a wax pattern for the post. A jacket crown is shaped and filled with wax. A bite is made in the wax and the resulting impression is then moulded in plaster.

OLD ENGLISH CRAFTS; BALDWINS BRUSH MAKERS ESTABLISHED 1854

Depicts the dying craft of making yard and paint brushes by hand at Baldwin's Brush Makers, Burnley. It includes footage of a yard brush head being created by a stock knife, holes being bored using a treadle machine and bristles inserted skilfully using pitch and twine, before the brush is trimmed. Also features the different process of applying bristles to a paintbrush, as they are strapped, levelled up, tacked and sealed to the handle. Other brushmaking skills such as combing fibres, cutting bristles and wiring brushes are also shown. Making snuff at the Gawith Hoggarth company in Kendal. At Helsington Mill, tobacco are unloaded and dried. Different grinding processes are shown; wet grinding using single and three pestle and mortar mills, and dry grinding using a ball mill. The snuff is sieved and packed before the film cuts to premises in Lowther Street where essences are added, and the product is sieved again. Weighing and packing processes are shown. The film ends with shots of the company director enjoying snuff in his office and a display of ornate snuff boxes. THE CRAFT OF RUSH SEATING BY COURTESY: H J BERRY AND SONS

Follows the weaving of a rush seat at the workshop of H.J. Berry & Sons in Chipping, Lancashire. Rushes are twisted together and woven around the seat frame of a wooden ladderback chair by the fingers of a skilled craftsman (or 'bottomer') and the use of a few simple tools. The woven seat is stuffed with straw and the finished item is displayed to the camera. Record of Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Burnley in 1968. Preparations are made as part of 'Operation Spring Clean' to decorate and clean local buildings and set up a covered stage outside St Peter's Church. Clergymen, councillors, dignitaries and members of local organisations gather in the churchyard as crowds line the street outside. The Queen is greeted by Lord Derby and the mayor, before she is introduced to selected officials, clergy and guests on the stage. Her Majesty signs the visitor's book and leaves in the royal car. The Garner's holiday in Newton Stewart, South West Scotland, spring 1968. They visit Port William and the Isle of Whithorn and explore the Galloway Forest Park where they climb to Murray's Monument and see Clatterinshaws Dam, Loch Trool and Merrick mountain. They also visit the Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbright, Girvan, Mull of Galloway, West Tarbet, Port Logan, Portpatrick and Stranraer. On the way home they stop briefly in the Lake District.
