ST. MATTHEW'S THE STORY OF THE SCHOOL

The story of St Matthew's primary school in Stretford. The film opens with scenes of school children playing in the school playground. Later, the children take part in a various races such as running and egg and spoon races. During a school trip to Heaton Park, the children play and roll down grassy hills, hire boats and play football. During the gala day, two men perform a judo demonstration. We see the crowning of the new Rose Queen followed by maypole dancing. The children go on a river cruise around Liverpool. In Lyme Park, the children play in the playground. The film cuts to the next year's gala day and crowning of the next Rose Queen, Pamela Jones. The film jumps to the next Rose Queen day. We see a procession of the new Rose Queen, Ann Williamson. The ceremony includes special guests Bobby Charlton and his wife Norma.

A family, mother, father and son with their pet dog watch TV while the mother knits then we see the father with his cine film equipment. A group of boys play football on a terraced street followed by afternoon tea with elderly relatives and scenes from a party. Southport promenade scenes are followed by flowers of condolences at Manchester's Southern Cemetery. Animals at a zoo [Belle Vue?] and Piccadilly Gardens scenes. A wedding [camera fault?], the bride arrives, exits the registry office with the groom then scenes from the reception at the Park Avenue Hotel with photographs taken in the hotels grounds.

Mrs Brookes, from Ordsall in Salford, is seen playing with her grandson, Philip, on the beach at West Kirby. The weather is grey and overcast and both of them are wrapped up well in hats and coats. Includes scenes of the little boy making a sandcastle and kicking a football across the beach. Salford Lads' Club boys are seen leaving by train from London Road Station in Manchester to go on camp in Aberystwyth. On arrival, there is an inspection and the lads are seen preparing and eating a meal. Some are seen washing up afterwards. There is a trip to the beach at Borth as well as to the nearby river for a swim. Everyone poses for the group photograph, and the winners of the football, table tennis and best kept tent competitions are seen. On the last day there is footage of the camp being packed up and the boys leaving for home.

Hilda makes a cake and decorates the tree, they exchange presents and eat Christmas dinner. They take gifts to Ada and Lily Ray at 11 Fifth Avenue and travel along a snow covered A34 to Wilmslow as Mr Garner describes the January 1963 weather in detail. They clear snow from outside their house and thaw out taps at the shop in Wilmslow. They visit Bathpool Park, Kidsgrove on another snowy day. In Ashbourne they watch the annual Shrovetide, a mass participation street football game with few rules. They visit Uncle John and Aunt Marjorie in Llandudno and go to Lake Vyrnwy, Nefyn, Aberdaron, Whistling Sands, Beaumaris, Penmon Point, the Lledr Valley and Rhyl. Scenes from the Eglwysbach Show Agricultural & Horticultural Show in North Wales. We see cattle being paraded on the show ground and competitors receiving their prizes and trophies. A group of cub scouts play football on the beach. The family enjoy some time on the promenade outside of Butlin's Pwllheli. They later visit the grave of David Lloyd George. Later, Patricia competes in the York Horse Trials and later can be seen receiving her prize. Harvesting in Dalton (Lancashire), Ashurst's Beacon can be seen in the background of the fields. Later the family gather together and pose infront of the house for the camera and again in the back garden. On the farm an excited lamb runs around a herd of goats. In separate scenes a woman plays with a puppy in the garden. The film ends with sightseeing in London.

Scenes of Mrs Brookes and her two grandsons in a park playground. The boys' father is seen climbing up the slide with his eldest son, who starts crying when he gets to the top. They are also seen having a ride on the roundabout. The film also features footage of 'Uncle Peter' providing family entertainment in the form of an open air children's show at Blackpool. Includes scenes of the boys and girls on stage, playing a game of musical chairs - a stick of rock is given to each of the losers and the winner received a football. Concludes with brief scenes of a couple of men and women from the audience, up on stage, singing into the microphone.

Continues with the Duke's arrival at Maine Road, he enters the stadium and is seen being introduced to the Manchester City team. There is brief footage from the match against Manchester United - United score. The Duke then visits a design exhibition, he is seen talking with designers and presenting awards. Closes with footage of the Duke and his entourage strolling around the King Street area. The Duke chats with members of the crowd lining the streets before leaving in the Royal Car.
