A long line of men are seen queuing in the rain to enrol as air raid precaution wardens, possibly outside Cheetham Hill Cathedral. This is followed by a procession of people in uniform through Albert Square, and a mayoral address at Manchester Town Hall.

Views taken from Blackpool Tower - shot from different heights - to demonstrate what a pilot sees at different altitudes. Training of ARP wardens (male and female) at Marsden Road Fire Station in Bolton - training includes the building of air raid shelters, dealing with casualties and putting out fires caused by incendiary bombs.

George VI and Queen Elizabeth are seen being greeted by civic dignitaries at the Marine Hall in Fleetwood on their 1938 Tour of Lancashire, and the Royal Train is seen leaving the town. During War Weapons Week of 19th to 26th April 1941, there is a firefighting demonstration in Memorial Park, the fund-raising totals are unveiled by the mayor and a party of civic dignitaries is seen on the steps of a building.
 
 
 
HOME DEFENCE ("GO TO IT")

Recruiting Air Raid Precaution officers in Salford. Reconstruction of an incident and how it is dealt with by officers, cycle messengers and rescue parties. Featured are a fire boat on the Irwell; rescue of casualties; dealing with contamination from various gas bombs at the ARP School in Easingwold - demos of gas masks and protective clothing, and controlled explosions, and cleaning up; civilian self help - the proper use of a stirrup pump, and safe escape from high windows. [The preservation of this film was funded by a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.]

A military procession of servicemen and women passes through the centre of Preston. Scenes from an event to raise funds for planes for the RAF - "Wings for Victory." Shots of the crowd in front of a stage, speeches are made and a number of racing pigeons are released. The sign on the stage reads "Our Target - £1,000,000." Footage from a cricket match concludes. A procession of various military and civil defence groups, including auxiliary firemen, nurses and ARP wardens, march past the mayor and other dignitaries on the banks of the Ship Canal. Horse racing scenes (location unknown) are followed by air-raid practice at Lancashire Steel Corporation's Irlam works, as well as fire fighting and first aid training and a demonstration of how to deal with a gas attack.

Members of the Turton Air Raid Precaution unit are seen constructing a scaffold - presumably to shore up bombed buildings. They are instructed on how to fit gas masks and suits and are also seen practising searching a bomb site for survivors.

Life in and around Malpas in Cheshire - the local hunt assembles in the village various sport scenes, children working in the gardens, and a prize-giving and physical training at the local school. Shots of motorcycle trials at Higher Barnes, scenes by the river and a games of football. A music festival with improvised musical instruments is seen in Chester in 1939, a trip to Chester Zoo and the circus comes to Malpas. St Oswalds' walking day is followed by holiday scenes and footage from the Shrewsbury Show. The makeshift band travel to London to perform on Children's Hour on the BBC, and evacuee children arrive in Malpas at the start of WWII. Film ends with scenes from the school fishing competition.

Scenes from Yealand Manor School showing evacuee children during a gym lesson on the lawn, playing in a sandpit and walking amongst flowerbeds (during a nature study lesson?). Includes footage of kitchen staff carrying saucepans into the school dining room as members of the school queue for their dinner posing in the doorway and children sitting in a window of the school house. Continues with scenes showing Headmistress Elfreda Vipont Foulds surrounded by some of her pupils posing for the camera, a group of children singing in front of the Manor and performing in a play entitled 'Woods and Copses'.

Footage shows Staff, including Committee member John Robson with other teachers during an official visit [?] and Kindergarten Assistant Frederica Voss [?] sat with children on the steps of the Manor. Continues with children playing amongst the garden flowerbeds and in a paddling pool. Includes a sequence showing kittens in a basket and pram. Footage of the Association members on a break at The Keswick Hotel in 1939. The film begins with two elderly members sat on a bench in the hotel grounds before being joined by others. After some of the men do touching of the toes exercises and posing by various cars the members visit The National Trust's Druid Circle standing stones. The film ends back at the hotel as the men play at putting on the lawn.

Film of a formal party held at the Brickhill's home in Cheshire on 28th January 1939. We see couples, including Harold and Mary Brickhill, in evening dress dancing in a large room with some women sat in chairs on the edge of the 'dance floor'. The couples split into groups and circle the floor doing the same dance and the film ends with guests digging for rewards in a bran tub.
