Film of a procession led by mayor Haworth (?) from Blackburn cathedral to the Town Hall on June 8th 1969. The procession includes contingents from the towns schools and a pipe band. This is followed by a march past by various bodies including the police and fire service, music is provided by the Salvation Army Band.

A group of volunteers led by Derek Pilkington are seen converting the mill into a textile museum. Includes scenes of school children being shown around the site and close up shots of the restored water wheel. (The film was broadcast in March 1970 as an entry for Chronicle's Industrial Archaeological prize)

ROYAL START AT HAYDOCK

Film of the royal opening of the Shell Mex and BP terminal at Haydock on 12th June 1969 by Princess Alexandra. A crowd of children are seen outside the site awaiting her arrival. The Princess and Mr Greave, the site director, are seen giving speeches in front of a crowd in a temporary grandstand before the Princess opens the terminal by switching on the traffic lights allowing the oil tankers to leave. The Princess tours the site, on foot and in a car, and the various processes involved in oil storage and delivery are seen. The Princess visits the canteen before leaving in the Royal Car.

Mr and Mrs Brookes, from Ordsall in Salford, are seen visiting friends in Hereford, in 1970. They are seen visiting various tourist attractions in the surrounding areas of Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Cotswolds. The film also features travelling shots of their coach journey - including scenes along the Severn Bridge. Includes brief shots of people queuing for a Mr Whippy ice cream and cows unloaded from the back of a lorry, to be sold at a cattle auction.

Concludes with scenes of the Brookes family sitting on the grass, in Heaton Park, listening to an open-air choral recital.

The boys are seen enjoying a ride on the Merry-go-round - some of the shots are in slow motion. They are also seen playing on the swings and joy wheel in the playground. Further footage includes other children and families paddling and relaxing around the shallow lido pool.

THE FIRST ACROSS. ALCOCK AND BROWN

Film about aviation pioneers Alcock and Brown, who were the first men to fly uninterrupted across the Atlantic. Traces their early careers and interest in aviation. Both lived in Manchester whilst young. Their homes in Old Trafford, Chorlton and Fallowfield are featured, as is Manchester Central High School and Manchester Technical Institute. St Annes, where Alcock went to school is also featured. The film features Archive footage of early aviation, World War 1 and Alcock and Brown in a variety of locations. There is a reconstruction of the first uninterrupted Atlantic crossing from Newfoundland to Clifden in Ireland which took place between 14 -17 June 1919. One of the men who first reached the 'plane on landing is interviewed as is Alcock's brother Eddie. The Science Museum in London - which houses the plane - is seen as is the Savoy Hotel in London, where a celebration lunch was held. The film also deals with Alcock and Browns lives following their Atlantic crossing. Commentary is provided by newscaster Richard Baker.

There are then scenes of Chester Morris Men dancing in Spinningfields, the Christmas lights on Deansgate, and shots of shop windows and interior displays in a department store (possibly Kendals). There is footage of a steam rally, a boating lake with ducks and geese, majorettes, the Poynton Jemmers (morris dancers) performing in King Street, and displays from mounted police, police dogs and pipe bands.
