| [THE DEMOLITION OF HULME] | |||
| Date: c1995 Film Number: 12941 | |||
| A compilation of mute camera rushes documenting the final days of the deck-access flats in Hulme in Manchester. The 1960s and 70s redevelopment of Hulme utilised prefabricated building systems popular at the time to provide new high-density housing replacing the grim Victorian slums. Though the new housing was initially popular, this did not last for long. Shoddily constructed, damp, cold and expensive to heat, it soon became prey to vandalism and crime, with tenants desperate to move out. As the housing emptied, it became a place for squatters, musicians, artists, and others on the fringes of society before its eventual demolition and redevelopment in the 1990s.
