SCENES IN THE TYROL

Scenes from the Tyrol. We see a group of local boys playing on the beach, they pile up on a wooden cart which they roll in to the sea. This is followed by rural scenes, the locals are filmed in a variety of rural situations. Their dress and farming techniques appear to be traditional. We see a boy in a field with a flock of sheep, fully laden carts being pulled by oxen and horses, a man with his cows and other scenes of the local people as they go about their lives. There are also scenes of children dancing and posing for the camera.

Scenes from a community procession, believed to be in Ormskirk, featuring cheerleaders and people in fancy dress parading down a street. The Carnival Queen arrives by car at a park and is presented with a trophy as the celebrations continue. [Catalogued as part of 'Revitalising the Regions' - a Screen Heritage UK project, 2011]

Compilation reel of various locations visited by the Preston family in the early 1930's. Includes scenes of the family in Southport, London, Harrogate, Stockport and the Isle of Man. The family are seen walking through a park, swimming in an open air pool, watching a street procession and air display. Further footage includes shots of various trains, trams and shipping vessels.

Scenes from a trip to Italy. There are titles added to the film that tell us the locations of the places we see. There are scenes from Lake Como, where the family stay at Villa Giulia. The family visit Rome, and there are scenes from around Rome including The Vatican, St. Peter's Square, the Colosseum and St. John Lateran. There are also scenes from Lake Maggiore. We see the Pallanza Battle of Flowers where there is a procession of horse drawn floats, heavily decorated with flowers. The people on the floats throw flowers at the crowds of spectators.

A couple filmed in various locations, plus scenes from the Westhoughton Gala and Rose Queen Carnival on August 3rd 1935. After opening shots of a boating pool, there are garden scenes outside a suburban house, featuring the couple and two pet dogs. At the Westhoughton Gala, a big procession led by Rose Queen Constance Bird passes through the town. The rest of the film features the couple on holiday in London, Stratford-upon-Avon, Torquay, Scarborough and Whitby. Also includes brief footage of Blackpool sea front and of a royal visit by George VI and Queen Elizabeth as they pass by in a car. A variety of scenes starting with garden scenes in Blackpool. A large group of people are seen in the garden with a dog. They have fun messing around for the camera and posing for a group shot. We then see scenes from Fleetwood of ferries leaving for the Isle of Man, the ferries we see are 'Mona's Queen' and the 'Lady of Mann'. We then see shots of Blackpool seafront on what the filmmaker describes as 'a rough day'. There follow scenes from the opening day of S.S. Bowling Club. There is a group shot of the club members and we see the president's speech, as well as 'the first wood'. Next we have scenes from Fairhaven Lake and a visit to Natland where people enjoy a picnic and paddling in a stream. There are scenes from a wedding. The guests throw confetti on the newlyweds before they get into the wedding car. Finally there are scenes from an air circus at Stanley Park where we see biplanes taking off and circling above.

After shots of boxing and outdoor games in Prairie Fields, Burnley, there is a military parade and field guns are fired. A thanksgiving for victory service in 1945 is filmed at Holy Trinity church. Shots of a pretty garden with a beehive, are followed by footage of Douglas seafront on the Isle of Man. After snow scenes from May 1935, people are seen driving cars and walking along country lanes. Holidaymakers relax on a beach and a family is pictured in their driveway and garden. Also contains brief shots of a military inspection and band, and a crowded main street.
