LOWER WITHINGTON ROSE QUEEN FESTIVAL SAT. 3RD JULY 1971

The festival parade begins with floats pulled by tractors, people in fancy dress collecting money for charity and the Rose Queens and retinues in a horse drawn carriage. At the carnival show ground we see children in fancy dress, the Rose Queen coronation ceremony followed by fancy dress and decorated float parades and prize giving.

The film begins with shots of a fire at Texas Mill, Ashton-u-Lyne, which resulted in the death of Fireman Norman Nolan from Blackley fire station. The funeral service at Blackley crematorium on 29th October 1971- the funeral procession including a fire engine; uniformed firemen precede the procession and then line the pathway.

Three distinct sequences: Manley Morris Men (using ribbons) and Cotswold Morris Men (using sticks and hankies) perform on a bandstand in Middleton, Bury pace-egg players perform in Bury town centre in front of the town hall and in Fairfield Square (accompanied by Lichfield Morris Men). A procession of numerous morris dancing troupes walk through Manchester from Piccadilly Gardens to Chetham's School of Music.

Continues with more outdoor backgarden scenes with children being pushed on swings by adults and playing a bat and ball game. Ends with a family trip to a playground and children aboard a Noah's Ark attraction at a funfair. (possibly Southport's Pleasureland)

We see various animals and exotic birds at Chester Zoo, and then we see scenes from Morecambe Beach and a visit to the Winged World Tropical Bird Aviary at Heysham Head. There follow scenes of the Moby Dick Ship fire in Morecambe. Firefighters attempt to put out the blaze and police officers are on the scene. Moving scenery is filmed from a boat on Lake Windermere, we see people enjoying boat trips on the lake. There follow scenes from another fire, this time at the Alhambra Palace Theatre in Morecambe. Firefighters attempt to put out the fire, and then we see the ruins of the building afterwards.

In Bank Square in Wilmslow, we see Clegg's shop just prior and during demolition and Mr Jones of Halliday Meecham architects checking the Garners' shop nearby will not be adversely affected by the work. Jarvis building firm starts work on the new building and the film ends with a trip to Bodnant Garden, North Wales. The Hodkinson family at home in Marple and on holiday in the Lake District, Blackpool and North Wales. Jane and Christine fly kites on a beach and paddle in the sea on a grey day. After shots of a royal visit to Manchester, with Royal Guards parading down Princess Street, there are holiday scenes featuring Blackpool, Lowther Wildlife Park, castles around Penrith, and the Lake District. Domestic scenes include the girls playing in the garden with a puppy, birthday parties and relatives visiting at Christmas. There is brief footage of Blackpool illuminations and the film concludes with visits to Conway, Swallow Falls, Llandudno and Anglesey.
