THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE FODEN HEAVY OIL ENGINED COMMERCIAL VEHICLE

This promotional film is a detailed introduction to the work that goes into the production of Foden's vehicles. Mr J. E. Foden opens the film with an introduction to the company and a brief history. We then have music from Foden's Brass Band. We are shown the work that takes place in the Drawing Office, the Experiment Shop, and the Laboratory - with the staff members in charge of these departments a detailed description of the work that takes place in each department. We see the foundry, the welding shop, the machine shop, the frame shop, the assembly line, the paint shop and then the testing of the vehicles. There is also some detail about the aftercare of the vehicles, and we see the Engine Overhaul and Repair Department and the Spare Parts Department. There are scenes of the factory workers on pay day, and a brief description of the range of activities that Foden provide for the workers. We see a bus made by Foden easily navigating the narrow streets of Sandbach. We are then shown scenes of Foden vehicles at work in a diverse range of industries, including Hillhead Quarries, Earle's Cement Works, Shipstones Brewery and Northern Motor Utilities. We see stills of the various types of vehicle produced by Foden, and a long list of repeat customers. At the end of the film Ted Janson, who handles sales, encourages potential customers to get in touch.
 
 
 
WE CELEBRATE OUR CENTENARY

Foden celebrate their centenary on 7th July 1956 with a parade and an afternoon sport event. After an introduction to the Foden board of directors, we see the parade. The parade includes a range of vehicles from different ages. There are horse drawn carriages, penny farthings, traction engines, veteran cars, vintage cars, lorries, road tankers, buses and lorries. There are also floats decorated by various Foden departments, marching bands and dance troupes. At the carnival field we see an afternoon sport event. People take part in a tug of war and various fun races including a wheelbarrow race, a sack race, an egg and spoon race, a fancy dress relay and a sprint. At the end of the film we see the Foden staff rehearsing for the parade. They put the finishing touches to their floats and practice driving their vehicles. We see a man having a very shaky practice go at riding a penny farthing.
 
 
 
FODEN THE TRUCKMAKERS

A promotional film for Foden's Truckmakers. The film opens with Foden's Brass Band playing, the shots of the band playing alternate with clips of the Foden's workers doing various tasks. We are given a brief history of the company and then we see scenes showcasing the Foden's factory in Sandbach, Cheshire. We see the different stages in the production of their trucks, with a commentary to inform us how these superior methods are unique to the company. We are then shown the wide range of trucks that Foden's make, and there are scenes from around the world of the trucks in use and we are told about the diverse range of uses to which they can be put. The film ends with more music from the brass band as we see more images of the Foden's trucks in use.

[FODEN CORPORATE FILM]

A promotional film for Foden. The film opens with scenes of a Foden lorry arriving at the port of Dover and then driving through London past all of the famous sights. We then see an event where historic Foden vehicles are on display. As we watch these scenes the commentary tells us all about Foden and their history. The film shows the many stages of manufacture of Foden's heavy vehicles at the vehicle assembly plant in Sandbach, Cheshire. We see the designers at work, the casting of components and the computer room. We hear in detail about their high standards of quality control and the thorough road testing of the their vehicles. Potential customers are reassured of their high level of after care and we see scenes from the warehouse where spare parts are sent all over the world quickly and efficiently. The film concludes with a look at Foden heavy vehicles at work in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. We also learn that Foden supply the British Army as an indication of the high quality and reliability of their vehicles.

This is an amateur film funded by the North West Arts Association. It features music and images accompanying the narrator who describes a dream of the violent death of an ancestor, possibly during The Peterloo Massacre on August 16th 1819. There are some shots around Manchester City Centre, recognisable locations are Manchester Central Library and Library Walk.
