Includes a brief history of the origins of the industry in Lancashire; cotton being grown, harvested and baled in the USA; and cotton arriving, being sorted, graded and then transported to Bury by rail. Mill processes - including carding, mule and ring spinning, dying and weaving - are all shown in detail, and there are views of the kitchens, boiler room and maintenance department. A lunchtime concert is held in the staff canteen, and the nursery is also seen. An explanation of how waste cotton can be turned into cloth is followed by views of office and clerical staff, and different kinds of cotton products - both war and peacetime - are seen. The film ends with a look to the future and introduces some new innovations, such as modern weaving sheds, automatic looms, a Works Council, first-aid provision and new training methods for recruits.
