ALL CHANGE! A DECIMAL GUIDE FOR RETAILERS

Film intended to inform retailers about decimalisation (which happened on February 15th, 1971), and to encourage them to convert to decimal currency. After establishing shots of rural and urban environments, the film explains the process of changeover with scenes in shops, and street footage. Dramatised sequences include the problems of a hardware shop owner who procrastinates about changing, and a scene in which a cheery landlord explains how the new coins work to sceptical drinkers.

The film opens with scenes from a cub scout football match and then we see the winning side being presented with a trophy. The boys play on the banks of a river and in rowing boats. We see them playing in the field where their tents are pitched, they take part in a sack relay race amongst other games. Two young boys read the Cub Scout handbook then put on their Cub uniform. We see the cubs playing games and having lessons before one of the boys is invested into St. Oswalds 57th Preston troop, recieving their scarf, woggle and badges. After saluting the flag we se the boys playing football in a park then the cub troop march from a church holding flags. An underexposed church service is followed by the cub leader taking part in a tree planting ceremony. The cub troop board a bus to take a trip to Chester Zoo where we have views of various animals and a boat trip on the River Dee.

More scenes from the Glossop and District Scouts camping trip to Holland in 1970. They visit a safari park in Arnhem and we see lions, ostriches, giraffes and zebras roaming around. We see the scouts viewing the graves at Oosterbeck War Cemetery. They take a sightseeing boat trip in Amsterdam and in Volendam we see the scouts posing with local people in traditional Dutch costume. At camp we see the boys swimming in a lake, relaxing by the tents and playing a game of football. We see the scouts playing in the water at Lake Ijsselmeer, others relax on the banks of the lake and we see other people water skiing. The scouts join in with a local carnival, they decorate a local lorry in a Glossop scout theme and take part in the procession. Finally the scouts attend a clog making demonstration and afterwards they have fun trying on the clogs.
 
 
 
KIRKBY- PORTRAIT OF A TOWN

Ray Gosling takes a look at Kirkby new town which, in 1970, is already suffering the effects of poverty, unemployment and poor housing. It includes locations around the town and interviews, particularly with the local youth, which highlights the problems the area faces. In this documentary film, Ray Gosling takes a typically idiosyncratic look at the overspill estate in Merseyside, and the social and economic issues caused by an unemployment rate of 20%. A mock city tour by bus takes us around the town, revealing the decay and lack of amenities, while the presenter talks to young people about their aspirations, concerns and desire to leave. Women recount their housing problems, while older adults despair of finding work. At the Centre 63 Club, disaffected young people gather to play pool and lark about, and the film ends in a school playground, with an open-air performance by pupils.

The film highlights Manchester's international and historical importance - featuring shots of the John Rylands Library, Trafford Park, the Manchester Ship Canal, Manchester Airport, Jodrell Bank and Manchester University. Manchester is shown to be a vibrant city, a variety of shops are seen as is a nightclub. Joe Mercer, manager of Manchester City, talks about football in the city and there is footage of Manchester United versus Chelsea. The content, production and distribution of The Evening News is featured - an editorial meeting (with Brian Redhead), the newsroom and the printroom are seen, as are van drivers delivering the paper. People are seen reading the paper on buses and in the street. A family are seen reading the paper in their home.

A coach trip to Blackpool for a group of men who are later seen playing bowls and football on the beach as well as singing on the coach and walking down the promenade. The film ends with views of a caravan and extensive shots of the Merrivale model village in Great Yarmouth.

We then see scenes from a Gala Day at Whitworth County Secondary School with dance troupes, various stalls, fairground rides and judo demonstrations. We also see dog obedience demonstrations where dogs perform a variety of tasks including jumping though hoops which have been set on fire. Mrs J Tierney, the second Lady Chairman of the Council, leads a procession of civic dignitaries to the Civic Hall.
