Scenes from Preston's Safety Week, organised by the Accident Prevention Committee. Posters and bus adverts are seen on the streets of Preston and the Transport Minister visits the Lancashire Constabulary's skid pan at Hutton. In Avenham Park there is a march past and dancing display by local children, followed by demonstrations of different causes of road accidents including stepping off a moving bus and playing in the road. Speeches are made by the Mayor and the Minister and the film ends with the Royal Corps of Signals give a demonstration of their work, including the use of pigeons.

Large metal drums are next seen being unloaded from lorries before a fire-fighting practice takes place on the site, presided over by the visiting Colonel Lyon. Divisional Officer Bentley awards prizes and delivers a speech to competitors and there is a final shot of the brothers Harry, Will, Tom and Jim Mason posing for the camera.

Somewhere on Leave is a 1943 British comedy film directed by John E. Blakeley and starring Frank Randle, Harry Korris and Dan Young. Private Randle (Frank Randle) and army pals, Privates Young (Dan Young) and Enoch (Robbie Vincent) are invited by Private Desmond (Pat McGrath) to spend some off-duty time at his stately home. Private Desmond is too busy courting an ATS girl (Antoinette Lupino) to notice the squaddies are running riot in his house.

COTTON BLOSSOMS

Film about the production of cotton and fabric in Bury and Lancashire during World War II. Includes a brief history of the origins of the industry in Lancashire; cotton being grown, harvested and baled in the USA; and cotton arriving, being sorted, graded and then transported to Bury by rail. Mill processes - including carding, mule and ring spinning, dying and weaving - are all shown in detail, and there are views of the kitchens, boiler room and maintenance department. A lunchtime concert is held in the staff canteen, and the nursery is also seen. An explanation of how waste cotton can be turned into cloth is followed by views of office and clerical staff, and different kinds of cotton products - both war and peacetime - are seen. The film ends with a look to the future and introduces some new innovations, such as modern weaving sheds, automatic looms, a Works Council, first-aid provision and new training methods for recruits. Compilation reel begins with John looking at all the birthday cards he received for his seventh birthday. Later, he runs and plays in a field dressed in a Native American costume and pretends to hit his mother with a tomahawk. In December, John counts down the days to Christmas Day and writes his letter to Santa Claus and puts the letter in the fireplace. On Christmas Eve, John hangs up his Christmas stocking and reminds his mother to not forget the party. Through the use of trick photography, presents, decorations and food 'magically' appear on the table. John decides it's time for him to go to bed. While he sleeps, Santa brings his toys to life. The next day, friends and family gather around the table for Christmas dinner. They light candles on a cake and John blows them out. Shots of friends and family (some wearing military uniform) drinking tea and generally fooling around. A woman and her husband (who is wearing a military uniform) pose for the camera with their young baby. John holds a calendar up to the camera, the 8th of July is marked for John's birthday. In the newspaper we see an article for the 1944 Holidays At Home. As well as a leaflet for Poole's Caucasian Circus. At the circus grounds, John goes on some of the rides such as the merry-go-round and waltzers. The film cuts to scenes of young boys playing football. The family stop at Mersey View, Frodsham to visit some friends, we see views of the helter-skelter. On Porth Wen beach they go swimming in the sea while others sit in the sun. The film cuts to a mother and her baby waiting for her child to come out of Warrington Grammar school. Back at home, family and friends sit around the table for tea and birthday cake. John can be seen blowing out the candles and cutting the cake. At an outdoor swimming pool, some adults watch as others dive from the diving board. Includes some slow motion shots of diving. Afterwards, they all enjoy a picnic together. The film ends with scenes of Grappenhall youth football team competing in the 1951 semi-final.

Film featuring activities undertaken by Horwich Independent Methodists. These include various sports and games - including cricket - a stone laying ceremony at Top o' th' Brow and a Young Person's Rally at Rivington Pike. There is much larking about and posing for the camera. A couple of weddings are featured - people are seen visiting a farm, a man in a suit is seen sitting on a cow - and various processions are seen. There is also footage of a group of people, mainly middle-aged women, relaxing in a large garden. They dance around and play with a whoopee cushion. Children are also seen playing in a park, taking part in a fancy dress event and dancing.
