Preparations and Rose Queen procession through the streets of Rochdale are followed by a horse-drawn Makenson's brewers cart making its way out of the yard and up a hill. A woman is seen playing with dog and child in front of a row of terraced houses and a brief view of a carousel at a fairground is followed by a family day trip to Hollingworth lake. Street scenes follow including shots of Rochdale Town Hall and the Regal Cinema. [Another procession makes its way past the old town hall in Oldham and is followed by Morris dancers. The closing scenes of the film show a mayoral procession in 1954 including members of the 41st Royal Tank Regiment Oldham and assorted shots follow showing snowy street scenes. | |||

Final preparations to the town hall are seen - flagpoles being painted, bunting being hung and carpet being laid. Crowds and civic dignitaries congregate outside the town hall on a rainy day, and on arrival, the Queen and Prince Philip are greeted by the Mayor and Lord Derby. Inside the town hall, the Queen unveils a plaque and signs the visitor book. The Royal party are seen on the balcony of the town hall, inspecting the Mayor's office and council rooms, and waving to the crowds as they leave. ATLANTIC DOUBLE CROSSING | |||

On May 23rd 1954 the 'Aries' and her crew left Kingston-upon-Thames for Kingston-upon-Hudson, 60 miles up river from New York. The 'Aries' was a 61 foot M.Y. fitted with two Foden 6 Cylinder Two-Stroke Diesel Engines. Her crew, Capt. Harcourt-Smith, Comdr Hight, David Foden and Sub-Lieut Skelton set sail from Kingston-upon-Thames after farewell drinks on board with the Governing Managing Director William Foden, the Mayor of Kingston and Admiral Lord Frazer. They are waved off by crowds. There are scenes of the crew on board the boat in Kingston-upon-Hudson, and then we see the crew on their return journey. They travel down the Thames, past the sights of London, and arrive in Kingston-upon-Thames where they are greeted by crowds of the public and the press. They have completed a 8500 mile round trip that has taken 1500 hours, and have experienced strong storms on the Atlantic. | |||
