A WELCOME TO THE SULTAN FROM HORROCKSES

A group of civic dignitaries, including the Mayor of Preston, escorts the Sultan of Zanzibar and his party on a tour of Horrockses textile mill in Preston on 14th June 1929. There are interior shots of the weaving sheds and shots in the mill yard with crowds of smiling mill workers. [The preservation of this film was funded by a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.]

A pageant to celebrate the presentation of a floral clock, statues and ornaments to the children's garden by George Audley. The clock is shown and the audience for the pageant, which consists mostly of dancing children representing the hours. Other performers include people in costume variously dancing and capering, one theme being Captain Hook, as a statue of Peter Pan is featured. The Mayor and George Audley make speeches and the floral clock is featured again.

Further footage includes the Stockport County v Barrow football match and the Reddish Friendly Societies Parade which was held on July 21st 1929. Mr Joshua Preston, Mayor of Stockport, is seen entertaining a group of nurses at his family home at Glengarry. He greets the women (who are not in uniform) as they get off a 'North Western' bus, and shows them around the gardens and grounds. The women participate in various fun races and are seen eating their lunch around tables on the lawn. Includes a shot of the buffet table. Staff are seen taking the covers off the food. A local Stockport 'Wireless Services Van' provides musical accompaniment outside in the garden. Two men stand next to the van winding up the gramophone. Concludes with footage of various members of the Preston family at a fair. Includes footage of a scout procession on April 21st and a jamboree at Arrowe Park in Birkenhead - Sir Robert Baden Powell takes the 'Grand Howl' with four thousand cubs. A troop of French scouts arrive in Stockport on the 7th August - several of the uniformed boys are seen boarding a tram. Further footage includes shots of Stockport British Legion's Drumhead Service in Vernon Park and the opening of the Lawrence Street steps in Stockport on August 9th. A tale unfolds about a young boy's quest to find the 'glittering sword' . Once the sword is in the king's possession, he declares war on the world - a battle commences and the boy regains peace by throwing the sword into the middle of a river.

WIGAN CARNIVAL

Scenes from Wigan Carnival in July 1929. Brief views of a brass band, followed by "Wigan on Wheels Pageant," a procession along Wallgate Street featuring numerous horse-drawn vehicles, bicycles (including a "bone-shaker") and carnival floats. Many of the participants are in fancy dress, and others collect money from the watching crowds. The film ends with views of the fun fair at Bull Hey, showing the different rides and stalls, including a merry-go-round and a Test-Your-Strength machine.
