A march in Manchester, approximately 500 strong, on 7th May 1984 during the Miners' Strike. Second part of Bob Litherland's speech at the march rally, followed by series of speeches including a woman from Ledston Luck Family Support Group talking about how families are being victimised. Speaker looks at the international dimension - apartheid, situation in Latin America, European Economic Community (EEC). Representative from NW Trade Union Council (NWTUC) and a Lancashire miner thanks the Yorkshire miners for attending. Then speech from Yorkshire Miners and a number of interviews about media coverage. CHINESE NEW YEAR - PROCESSION AND CHINA TOWN

Chinese New Year celebrations in China Town, Manchester. Street scenes of crowds milling around St Peters Square, waiting for the procession to arrive. Lots of children and families. Procession arrives with Chinese dragons. Chinese singing in background. Blowing up balloons in a balloon stall. Then into China Town, with a stage set up in the car park. A number of celebrities including Pat Phoenix and a DJ from Piccadilly Radio greet the crowds. Games and competitions for the children. The Lord Mayor gives a welcoming speech, wishing people success for the Chinese year of the rat. More speakers are followed by the Lord Mayor waking the lion of the New Year amidst drumming and clanging of cymbals. The lion dancing continues on the forecourt of the stage in front of the crowds. CHINESE NEW YEAR - CHINA TOWN AND HO'S BAKERY

Chinese New Year celebrations in China Town, Manchester. On an outdoor stage in the main car park of China Town, individuals perform a range of martial arts, dances, stunts and other feats including breaking bricks, with a commentary by a DJ from Piccadilly Radio. Then a mass of balloons are released into the sky. Large crowds of people, lots of children and families. General shots of people departing from the area and many going into Ho's Chinese Bakery. Shots into Ho's Bakery of people queuing to buy Chinese cakes and confectionary. Then shots from inside the shop with people ordering cakes and being served. Ends with interviews with people in the streets about the events of the day - Was it a good New Year celebration? INTI ILLIMANI - NICARAGUAN CONCERT AND SPEECHES

Concert at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester in solidarity with the Nicaraguan people which includes performances by Frankie Armstrong, Leon Russelson, Roy Bailey and Inti Illiman. This part of the concert includes performances by Frankie Armstrong, Leon Russelson and Roy Bailey on stage together. They sing eight songs, including their first song dedicated to the women of the disappeared called 'A woman has disappeared in Chile'. The concert is followed by a resolution by Manchester City Council to support the Nicaraguan people, and Rosario Antuness addresses the audience in Spanish, translated by Michael Vaughan, with a message of peace and the desire to keep freedom alive at whatever cost, having gained freedom through five years of revolution and now great transformations. Then a speaker on behalf of Manchester Central America Solidarity Campaign gives an account of her recent visit to Nicaragua, where the people have absolutely nothing but have given so much. A musical concert at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Meli Antu's formation in 1974 following their exile from the military coup and Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile in 1973. In this first part, Paul Morris from the Chile Solidarity Campaign welcomes people and speaks about the campaign. He thanks Meli Antu for their contribution to the cultural scene in Manchester and their struggle against Pinochet's dictatorship and for the liberation of all people from oppression. In this second part, the curtain falls on the Chilean dance troupe Huelin, based in Cambridge, followed by messages of solidarity read by Rosa Hervia and a short speech by Maria Isobella Vaughan about the forces of resistance in Central America. Meli Antu give a short introduction and history of their group, but before they start, Huelin finish their dance routine and Francisca Carrosco introduces the group. Followed by two male guitarists and singers from Santo Domingo. Maria Isobella Vaughan introduces a woman guitarist and singer from Colombia, followed by Chilean dancers. In this second part, an Irish Band comprising a mixed group of girl and women musicians playing traditional tunes with flutes, violins, whistles and accordions are joined by a group of Irish dancers.
