INTERNATIONAL FOLK EVENING - MELI ANTU

A concert at St Peter's Chaplaincy in Manchester, organised by ACHLA (Chilean and Latin American Cultural Association), dedicated to under privileged children of the world. Meli Antu, the Chilean cultural group in exile perform. Eduardo Avalos introduces the group, whose name means Four Suns, and came from the indigenous Mapuchian Indians in South Chile. He explains their background in Chile, the Pinochet coup, their imprisonment and their exile to Britain and formation of the group in 1974. They perform almost to the end of the concert and are then joined by Chilean dancers and finally by people from the audience. He also speaks about the Liaison Committee he started in Norfolk on an experimental basis a year ago as a way to liaise with the general public. Paul Okojie interviews Mrs Margaret Simey, the Merseyside Police Authority Chairperson. She speaks about her experience on a previous authority before 1974 when it changed. When the Conservatives were in government, the role was clearly to support the Chief Constable. When Labour was in government it became a forum for democratic scrutiny for democratic control. So very much a political issue. She explains that 'a politician is responsible before an event, police during and event and Police Committee after the event,' and speaks at length about different approaches in Police Authorities. How money is a significant limitation now. He talks about the Liaison Committee and how to address the poor attendance. Paul Okojie talks about the Government White Paper on streamlining the cities and what his reaction is to this proposal. Crowds explore the dock looking at the Tall Ships, and the film concludes with a procession and views of dinghies and wind-surfers in the Albert Dock. Ships seen include the Gloria, the Kruzenshtern and the Sir Winston Churchill.
