METROLINK: TRANSFORMING OUR FUTURE

A film produced for GMPTE to demonstrate the success of Metrolink since it was officially opened by the Queen on 17th July 1992. We see trams in operation across the Metrolink network. We see passengers on board trams, and boarding and alighting at various stations. We follow passengers on their journeys as a demonstration of how Metrolink is used by the residents of Greater Manchester for work and leisure. We learn about the extension of the Metrolink system to Salford Quays and Eccles and we see Prime Minister Tony Blair opening the new line at Salford Quays and later Bev Hughes MP opening the extension to Eccles. The commentary tells us how successful Metrolink has been and tells us of the benefits it has brought to the residents of Greater Manchester. We are told of the plans for the expansion of the Metrolink system in the future to other parts of the region.

The film opens with information about the problems the world is currently facing due to climate change and then there is a brief history of the Bidston Observatory. We learn about the work of the Proudman Oceanographic Observatory and we meet the scientists who talk about the development and deployment of their equipment. There are scenes out at sea where we see the equipment being deployed and back in the laboratory where we see the data that has been collected being processed.

The boys are helping to put a new pump into the garden pond, and we see lots of views of the pond when the pump is up and running. There are also scenes shot inside the house. We see the Leach family having a barbecue at home in the garden, and the boys helping with some jobs in the garden. We then see Emily, she is a little girl and she plays at doing jobs in the garden. Her baby sister Rachel is in a buggy. We then see lots of scenes with Emily and Rachel. They are given a bath together and we see Rachel being fed. Emily plays in the garden where she has a sandpit, a paddling pool and a slide. We also see Emily playing indoors. The summer scenes are followed by events from December 2001. We see Emily taking part in a nativity play, and then at home helping to make mince pies. On Christmas Eve we see the family in the living room. The girls are helped to hang up their stockings and leave a carrot for Rudolph and a mince pie for Santa. On Christmas morning we see the family opening their presents and Emily plays on her new Barbie scooter. A few days later we see Emily playing in the snow covered garden.

Family film from the Leach family, mainly focusing on Emily and Rachel. The film opens with snow scenes from December 2001. The family go out for a walk in the snow, and Emily plays in a sledge. In 2002 there are small family gatherings at home for Emily and Rachel's birthdays. The family eat cake and the girls open presents. The family work together to decorate baby Rachel's bedroom, Emily is filmed painting the wall. There are lots of domestic scenes, including family members watching TV and a tour of the family home, including shots of the cat and the pet hamsters. We also see the girls playing in the garden. There are family holidays and trips to the beach. We frequently see the girls playing on the beach with other family members. We also see the family at a campsite with their tent.

Family scenes from the Leach family, mainly focusing on Emily and Rachel. The film begins with a family holiday to Wales in July 2003. We see the family in Conwy visiting the castle and playing on the beach. In Llandudno the family ride on a cable car and on the Great Orme Tramway. We see shots of them on the pier and of the surrounding views. They also visit a zoo and the girls have lots of fun watching the antics of a chimpanzee family. Back home the girls dance to music in the living room, and then we see them in the same room decorating the Christmas tree. On Christmas Eve the girls hang up their stockings and leave a mince pie for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph. We see them opening their presents on Christmas Day. At a later time they play with Thomas and Joseph in their snow covered front garden. In January we see Emily's birthday party in a restaurant. Later we see Emily back at home opening her presents. This is followed by scenes from Rachel's birthday where we see her opening presents in the living room. Later, in April 2004 we see the girls in the living room watching the family home movies on the television, In May 2004 Emily rides her bicycle outside and we see Rachel on a tricycle. Later in May there is a sports day where the children take part in a variety of races. This is followed by brief scenes from August 2002 where we see a little boy and his father flying a kite. The family take a tour of some caves at Speedwall Cavern in Castleton, and we see underground shots of the caves. In October 2001 Emily helps her Mum to decorate her bedroom while baby Rachel watches from her buggy and in November 2001 we have scenes from Dad's birthday. There are fireworks and later we see Emily admiring his cards. In December 2001 the family take a ride on the East Lancashire Railway Santa Train. Finally in August 2002 we see the family playing in the sea and on a beach.
