HIVE NO. 2 - SIGNS OF LAYING

As part of the Baytrees Bee Project in Harpurhey in Manchester this short film shows the apiarist Kay Phillips examining the frames of Hive 2, looking for signs of egg laying on 9 April 2017. The frames are put into a smaller hive or Nuc box to help develop the colony before returning them to Hive 2 at a later date.

As part of the Baytrees Bee Project in Harpurhey in Manchester this short film, shot on 14 May 2017, shows the bees pollinating flowers then Kay Phillips lifting out the frames from the hives and getting close ups of the bees. The film end with another hive without frames with Kay blowing on the bees to reveal the hives structure.
 
 
 
HIVE 3 - SWARM PREVENTION

As part of the Baytrees Bee Project in Harpurhey in Manchester this short film, shot on 28 May 2017, shows bee keeper Kay Phillips looking into Hive 3 and showing us the Queen Cups, structures made by the bees to create a new Queen so the colony can swarm. Kay removes these cups so that more honey is produced.
 
 
 
HELPING OUT WITH RESEARCH NO. 1

As part of the Baytrees Bee Project in Harpurhey in Manchester, this short film shows bee keeper Kay Phillips opening the hives on 17 June 2017, and talking to Emma, a Bangor University student researching the differences between urban and wild bees. She collects samples of bees from each of the hives and discusses the use of Verroa mite boards at the base of the hives.

She transfers the colony of bees to a brood box before feeding the bees with a sugar syrup solution The film ends with a close up of a bee with pollen on its back legs and bees flying into the brood box. In the 2nd year of the Brew Wild project we see the production of a Honey Pale Ale made in collaboration with Baytrees Bee Project, Blackjack Brewery and Reasons to be Cheerful Cafe. Kay Phillips takes Tom from the Blackjack Brewery to see the bees in Harpurhey then Tom explains the beer making process and the hops that are to be used to make the honey beer Next we visit the hives at Baytrees and discover the queen bee then in a kitchen the honey is extracted by a couple from the Reasons to be Cheerful Cafe. After tasting the honey we see the pouring of a pint of Honey Pale Ale at the Runaway Brewery bar and hear the positive comments of the drinkers

The head brewer at the Runaway Brewery explains how the honey will be added to the wort, he mixes the Baytrees honey with other honeys then adds the mixture to the beer before finally testing the gravity to help determine the strength of the beer.
 
 
 
BREW WILD GETS FIRST BREW UNDER WAY

As part of the Brew Wild project the first batch of honey pale ale is brewed at the Red Willow Brewery in Macclesfield. The various types of malt is added to the mash tub then the honey from Harpurhey, Heaton Park, Salford, Wythenshawe, Manchester and Longford Park is mixed then added to the beer. Hops and marjoram are added to the copper before being put into another container to brew for 10-12 days.
