ROYAL VISIT TO BURY MAY 20TH 1938

Crowds gather in Bury town centre for the arrival of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth who are visiting as part of a Royal tour. The film cuts to the presentation of the new colours to the 'Old Contemptibles' by the mayor of Bury, councillor O.L.W. Whitehead. The King and Queen arrive and are greeted by the mayor and civic dignitaries. The King inspects the Guard of Honour, escorted by Lt. Colonel J.K. Hopkinson. Next is the presentations, where the King and Queen greet and shake hands with various people. The film ends with shots of a military band and soldiers marching through Bury town centre.

Troops are lined up for inspection and the Mayor and councillors arrive - flags (colours) are presented by the Mayor. Lord Derby arrives with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Their Majesties talk to the waiting crowds before receiving people on the platform. The King and Queen are seen leaving the Derby Hall.

There are scenes in Southport, of the Pier tram, and the Noah's Ark, Water Chute and miniature railway rides at Pleasureland. The final section shows a picnic in Chester with views of the Cathedral, Haddon Hall and a boat. There is also a shot of Alton Towers.
 
 
 
HIGH VOLTAGE THERAPY AT ST BARTHOLOMEW'S HOSPITAL

The film begins with detailed shots of the workings of a large x-ray applicator at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, including the negative and positive generators, and the electro-hydraulically operated vacuum tap. The machine is them demonstrated in action with a patient lying underneath it ready for treatment. The bed is adjusted to ensure that the patient is in focus. After he is locked inside the x-ray room, the x-rays are taken by the nurse in the control room.

A long line of men are seen queuing in the rain to enrol as air raid precaution wardens, possibly outside Cheetham Hill Cathedral. This is followed by a procession of people in uniform through Albert Square, and a mayoral address at Manchester Town Hall.

The wedding of Gordon Welch and Margaret Hill in 1938. The wedding party is seen leaving the house in Bowdon and heading to the church. The bride and groom leave the building after the ceremony and the guests are seen at the reception at the Bowden Hotel. The rest of the film features other members of the Hill family; digging in the garden, at Rhyl, having a cliff-top picnic at Bedruthan Steps near Newquay and playing on the beach. The film ends with Margaret and her mother playing with the dog and the cat in the garden.

Promoting the educational use of film in the classroom, with specific reference to handicraft teaching. After shots of a school workshop, a boy takes out a camera and projector from a large toolbox. A hand-drawn map of the world prefaces footage from Africa and Norway showing how logs are cut and transported. The film proceeds to show a variety of woodwork and metalwork tools and techniques, including the making of a reading lamp.
