Scenes from a father and son 5th Sale and Ashton cub scout camp. We see the adults sat by the cooking pot then playing cricket with the boys followed by bthe cubs sat around the campfire singing. The boys playing football then building wooden frames before walking in the countryside. Next we see the boys playing swingball, cooking sausages before packing up the tents. The film ends with a prizegiving with the boys handing their fathers a certificate.

Assorted footage featuring Dorothy and Thomas Hodkinson outside their bungalow, in different locations on the Fylde Coast and beyond. A Silver Jubilee tram is seen at Cleveleys and there are shots of Blackpool featuring the sea front, views of Stanley Park and rides at the Pleasure Beach. A royal visitor (believed to be Princess Anne) arrives by helicopter for an event at Rossall School in Fleetwood which features various displays and activities. The Hodkinsons visit Steamtown Carnforth and Hornsea Pottery in Lancaster before the film ends with shots of the Thornton Cleveleys Relief Road under construction. [LEISURE TIME WITH THE ASHTON CHILDREN]

Scenes of the Ashton children playing with their grandparents at Manor Park in Glossop, followed by their learning to swim at a pool with their mum Diane. Adults and children are seen enjoying themselves at a party for a Royal Wedding and wandering around at a carnival. The family take a trip to the zoo and then build sandcastles at the beach together. There are views of a seaside holiday camp and of a Whit Walk procession through a town centre, before the kids try out the rides at a fairground. Concludes with them practicing their swimming again at a public baths.

[SALFORD LADS' CLUB CAMP 1978]

The camp for Salford Lads' Club in Aberystwyth is seen being set up prior to their arrival. When they do, the lads are seen playing football, swimming in the river, cooking a meal and washing up afterwards. Everyone poses for a group photograph, an inspection is held, and there is footage of a coach trip to the beach and a funfair. On the final day, the camp is packed up and the boys head home.

Film looking at the building of a successful football team, using Manchester United as an example. Sir Matt Busby is interviewed about his post-war team, and explains how he put it together. The current team are seen in training - the individual qualities of each type of player are examined, and the importance of the captain's leadership on the pitch is highlighted. The treatment of injuries to players is seen, and the issue of team discipline is also addressed.

WHITBREAD WEST PENNINES NEWSREEL 1978

The Whitbread West Pennines newsreel features promotional events for Whitbread breweries that took place in 1978. The events are sponsored by Whitbread and we see their senior staff at these events presenting awards and giving speeches. The film opens with scenes from the North Lonsdale show at Ulverston where there are horse and cattle shows. We see the qualifying round for the Whitbread Young Riders Competition at the Manchester Show. Jean Milner is the winner on her horse Style. We see the Taxi Drivers Outing for Handicapped Children setting off from Rivington Hall - Jimmy Savile is present. There are motor boat racing scenes at Thornton, where we see the North West Powerboat Racing Championship taking place on the River Wyre. At Anfield Stadium there is a Whitbread sponsored match between Liverpool Football Club and Queens Park Rangers, with a buffet lunch before the game for Whitbread staff. There is a similar event for a Whitbread sponsored match between Everton and Southampton. After the game Colin Todd is presented with the award for 'Man of the Match'. There are scenes from Shaw Hill Golf Club where we see The 1978 Whitbread Trophy Northern Golf Tournament. The tournament is between West Pennines and East Pennines and many of the players are named in the commentary as we see them taking part in the game. After the tournament there is an event for the participants and Whitbread senior staff members. The film ends with scenes from the Samlesbury fully automated can products warehouse. We see the automated system which stores the canned beer and gets it out onto the lorries in action.

The locations include Knowsley Hall, Liverpool Docks, Kirkby Sports Centre, Huyton shopping precinct, Knowsley Safari Park and Prescot street scenes. Presenter Brian Redhead takes a look at the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley in Merseyside in this promotional film advertising the commercial and general attractions of the area. Beginning with Knowsley Hall, the historic home of the Earls of Derby, we visit a wide range of locations including Knowsley Safari Park, Kirkby Sports Centre, Liverpool Docks, Huyton, Prescot, and see the traditional craft of horseshoeing at Crompton Smithy. Local nightlife is represented with a floor show at Kirkby Suite, and the film also shows the easy transport links for leisure purposes to the Lake District, Southport and Snowdonia.

Scenes from a Moss family holiday in Spain, a group of children holding puppies then in a playground on the seesaw and slide. The Moss children enjoy a donkey ride through a Spanish village then walking by a harbour. After beach scenes a group of children sit at a table eating and drinking. Bull fighting scenes is followed by the Moss children exploring a castle and formal gardens then diving into a swimming pool. The film ends with the children playing in the garden and picking flowers in the countryside.
 
 
 
[FARM, FOOTBALL MATCH, CHIPPING SHOW, ALL SAINTS CHURCH, RAINFORD, 21ST BIRTHDAY PARTY]

Farming and family scenes from the Heyes family of Mossborough Hall Farm in Rainford, St. Helens. The film opens with scenes of a mechanical digger parked up, which we later see in use. We then see a family gathering at home, people chat and are encouraged to talk for the camera, but nobody really wants to. An elderly lady plays 'English Country Garden' on the piano. We see a football match, and a herd of sheep being herded down from the hills. A grandmother and her grandson chat in front of the camera. She has been sent a record by Reader's Digest which gives details of how you can win some money, she wants him to listen to it and tell her what to do. We see scenes from the Chipping Show, female Black and White Faced Leicester sheep are being judged and Mr Hayhurst wins the championship. The girl behind the camera films the scenery around the farm on 27 April 1978, and points out sites of interest in the distance, including Knowsley Safari Park, Rainfords Farm, Rainhill Asylum, Fiddlers Ferry, Pilkingtons Head Office, St. Helens, Peasley Cross, Puffing Billy, the Sheet Works, Sir Harry Pilkington's residence, Moss Bank and Fairfield. On 7 September 1978 Mrs Heyes films the altar at Rainford All Saints Church which has been decorated by herself, Helen Fishwick and Alma Howarth for the church centenary. We see snow scenes on 21 January 1979, they are feeding the cattle in Knowsley Park after having six inches of snow. The film ends with scenes of James' 21st Birthday Party. James cuts the cake and Uncle Basil gives a toast before James gives a speech, and we see people dancing.

Promotional events for Whitbread Breweries. We see a Whitbread-sponsored Manchester United football match at Old Trafford. There are scenes from the match and from a reception event afterwards with food and drink. We see a horse drawn cart leaving the brewery and delivering beer to local Whitbread pubs. Crowds of spectators come out to watch. There is a Whitbread tent at a horse racing event. There is a bar in the tent and people sit down to eat. A promotional Whitbread float takes part in a procession in Speke. Whitbread have a stall on the carnival field and the Mayor is shown how to pull a pint. There are scenes from the Whitbread Trophy Northern Golf Tournament. We see scenes from the game and the event afterwards where there are speeches and trophies are presented. We also see footage of the building of houses for Whitbread West Pennines Ltd. The film ends with an assortment of brief scenes, one of which may be of a field of hops.
