MELI ANTU'S 10TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT WITH HUELIN - PART 1

A musical concert at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Meli Antu's formation in 1974 following their exile from the military coup and Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile in 1973. In this first part, Paul Morris from the Chile Solidarity Campaign welcomes people and speaks about the campaign. He thanks Meli Antu for their contribution to the cultural scene in Manchester and their struggle against Pinochet's dictatorship and for the liberation of all people from oppression. The demonstrators walk in front of the BBC on Oxford Road, Manchester. towards Manchester City Centre. Demonstrators featured include Close up of Mohsin Zulfiqar, Gareth Richards, Paul Okojie, Francisca Carrasco and other members of Meli Antu, a Chilean group. They arrive at Albert Square for a rally where Gareth Richards welcomes the Chilean comrades and speaks about Pedro's situation and cultures of resistance. Rosa Hervia speaks about the spirit of struggle and introduces Omar and Doris Maldonado - Chilean musicians and singers - who sing for about 13 minutes. The rally is in Albert Square, Manchester where Francisca Carrasco talks about Chile on behalf of ACCHLA (Chile and Latin American Cultural Association) and the danger of sending Pedro back to Chile. Then Pedro speaks about his imprisonment in Strangeways Prison in Manchester. There are a series of other speakers who recount the worsening situation for black people in the UK and the Pinochet coup in Chile. Final speaker is Morenga Bambala from the All Africa People's Revolutionary Party (AAPRP) who speaks in solidarity with people under threat of deportation. 'HEROES AND MARTYRS' FROM NICARAGUA - INTERVIEW

Footage of the visit by the Nicaraguan band 'Heroes and Martyrs' to WFA in Manchester. The group are interviewed by Michael Vaughan and a group of other activists including Maria Isobella Vaughan, May Stone, Dot McGovern, Rosa Hervia and an interpreter translates for the group. They talk about how they were set up - formed by a group of people from the countryside wanting to express the feelings of the people through their songs. Their name comes from a massacre that took place in Nicaragua in 1952 as a way of remembering. The people who were killed were rural workers organising in the countryside. They talk about the attacks of the Contras on the population today and the impact of the economic situation on the country with the US blockade. They are asked questions about the rumour that the Sandinistas are supplying arms to neighbouring countries and how they organise against the atrocities taking place. Also the role of women and how the tour came about which they explain in terms of the growing terror being imposed on them and the necessity to gain more support for their cause. Footage of a concert by the Nicaraguan band 'Heroes and Martyrs' at WFA in Manchester. The evening is introduced by Maria Isobella Vaughan who talks about the Ronald Reagan presidential regime in USA and attacks made on Sandanista revolution - people fighting for their own liberation. Then Francisca Carrosco on behalf of ACCHLA (Chilean and Latin American Cultural Association) welcomes Nicaraguan comrades. Chilean people and all peoples give solidarity with the struggle of the Nicaraguan people. There are messages from the NUM (Miners Union) who have given support to the Nicaraguans and welcome the resurgence of popular culture. The group of five musicians then start to play - accordions, guitars and Spanish vocals. People dance on the small area in front of the stage. During the interval a speaker from Pakistan talks about US imperial policies in Pakistan and Morenga Bangbata speaks about apartheid in Azania (South Africa). The aim of Zionism to establish a Jewish homeland in Palestine and therefore its need to align with the occupying power. The fourth of ten sessions of a season of Palestinian films, talks and discussions, held at WFA Media and Cultural Centre in Manchester. This session, entitled Kibbutzim and Palestinians, has a panel of four people - Elfie Pallas, editor of the Israeli Mirror and former co-ordinator of the Middle East Research & Action Group; Dr Salim Sakakini and Linda Balff (both from Palestine Solidarity Campaign); and Fred Coker from WFA. Elfie gives a comprehensive talk about the kibbutzim, its disproportionate influence for its small size while owning 25% of the land, the establishment of settlements on Palestinian land, and despite it being a "perfect socialist solution" how it has worked against the Palestinians. She answers questions from the floor and after she leaves Salim and Linda lead the discussion about a range of issues - military production on kibbutz, position of oriental Jews, unsustainablity of kibbutz and many others. The sixth of ten sessions of a season of Palestinian films, talks and discussions, held at WFA Media and Cultural Centre in Manchester and entitled 'Zionism, The Jewish People, State of Israel'. Fred Coker from WFA introduces the two speakers, Tony Greenstein and Roland Rance, progressive, anti-zionist Jews and members of the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign National Executive. Both have been recently banned by various student unions because of their views. They speak about Zionism and anti-semitism, the Zionist movement and its relation to Palestine, and Zionism as it is practised in Israel. Roland speaks about the Israeli state's intention to dominate the region, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran and about the the massacre at Deir Yassin in 1948.
