Side of stage coverage of the afternoon session on 16 April, chaired by Geoff Bott with panel - Terry Ranger, who taught in Zimbabwe 1957-63, deported in 1963, author of several books on Zimbabwe and now Professor of History at Manchester University; Ben Shepherd, South African film-maker of 'Chimurenga'; Vincent Quenda, member of ZANU (Zimbabwe African National Union); Simon Stocker from War on Want; and Joshua Chitsuka and Sepuwa Metswaro, both from Zimbabwe. Terry Ranger gives a 20 minute introduction to the film, 'Chimurenga', with focus on the dangers of distorting history and how history and culture are enormously combative areas. After the screening, Ben Shepherd, talks about the film, how it came about and where he sees the weaknesses in the film now. The eighth session of a 10 week Celebration of African Culture, held at WFA Media and Cultural Centre in Manchester between February and May 1983. Gareth Richards chairs panel, including Terence Ranger and Kareen, and audience discussion after the screening of Osman Sembene's film 'Ceddo'. Kareen talks about the false conclusion western women make in their interpretation of the film, as one about women's liberation, and she quotes from Sembene to clarify the meaning of the film. Terence Ranger speaks about the importance of understanding Senegal, with its Muslim majority and process of 'Islamisation,' of which the film is a critique. After 7 minutes, contributions are opened to the floor with Gus John talking about women and Islam, and then much more discussion about these issues. This is followed by the evening session, chaired by Gareth Richards and panel including Terence Ranger, Gus John and Angela Martin, who gives the background to Haile Gerima's making of the film 'Harvest'. She talks about the devices he uses in the film, which are different to conventional western ones. Gus John talks about the position of Rastafarians and the current Ethiopian situation, and Terence Ranger about the many stages of the Ethiopian revolution. Side of stage coverage of the final 11 minutes of the cultural performance on Saturday evening by the London-based band 'Steel and Skin'. Followed by footage of the music workshop in the tenth session, and the final session of the celebration on 1 May 1983. Starts with Abina Braithwaite singing with a backing band from Abasindi. After approximately 10 minutes, 'Steel and Skin' begin their workshop. They explain and demonstrate how they put their music together from pure percussion to African dance music. The audience are welcomed to participate and they all perform together. Includes dancing with Bernie Butcher, Paulette Cluney, Diane and Frankie from Abasindi - including a Ghanaian dance where girls dance in order for bachelors to chose their partners. An introduction is given by Eddie Frow and a fellow IBer who explain the purpose of the meeting - to discuss the recently screened Channel 4 programme about the Spanish Civil War as a corrective based on their own experience and understanding. The discussion is being filmed with the intention that it supplements the programme in a corrective way. Contributions are made by many IBers and their families, giving a critique of the programmes. Includes a contribution by Sam Wild and is followed by footage of the IBers and their families at the SOGAT Club.
