Special mention is made of Ian MacGregor, an American industrialist brought in to run the National Coal Board, the body running the coal mining industry. [MINERS' MARCH AND RALLY IN MANSFIELD]
Date: 1984 Film Number: 12950

To the sound of a brass band, miners and their supporters march with banners and placards in Mansfield in Nottinghamshire. Questions put to the marchers reveal the strength of feeling in the crowd, as people stress the fight is for their children’s and grandchildren’s employment prospects as well as the economic future of their area. Though they express confidence that the strikers will be victorious, one miner criticises the media coverage, saying that the dispute is primarily a fight for jobs but is portrayed as a political battle between the NUM president Arthur Scargill and the prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. Others talk about the lack of solidarity in the mining community, the strike being a bitterly divisive issue in the East Midlands. The march through Mansfield ends in a rally, where Arthur Scargill addresses the crowd. Continued in 'Miners and supporters at the Mansfield rally'. [MINERS AND SUPPORTERS AT THE MANSFIELD RALLY]
Date: 1984 Film Number: 12951

Arthur Scargill, president of the NUM, addresses a crowd of miners and supporters at a rally in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, following their march through the town. His speech stresses the importance of loyalty to the union and fellow strikers, with the emphatic cry of “You don’t cross picket lines!” People in the crowd voice their appreciation of the huge turnout, and two miners from a colliery in North Wales talk about how heartening it is to be at the Nottinghamshire event. Despite the mixed response to the strike call from local pits, with some men continuing to work, confidence is high. As one of the Welsh miners puts it, “How can you lose with people like this?” Continues in 'Strike supporters in Mansfield speak out'. [STRIKE SUPPORTERS IN MANSFIELD SPEAK OUT]
Date: 1984 Film Number: 12952

An interview with an elderly couple, strike supporters at the miners’ rally in Mansfield in Nottinghamshire. One recalls occasions in earlier decades when the town lent its support to labour disputes, for example the Harworth Colliery disturbances of 1936-7. Her husband recalls the occasion on which A. J. Cook, General Secretary of the Miners’ Federation of Great Britain, came to speak during the 1926 General Strike. Both praise the widespread support the miners are receiving from across the labour movement, and single out for praise the women’s groups and younger participants. The film finishes with brief shots of a colliery while an official from the National Coal Board questions the cameraman over his right to be there This title was digitised and preserved as part of the BFI Heritage 2022 programme. MINERS CAMPAIGN TAPE PROJECT VIDEO NO. 1
Date: 1984 Film Number: 12963

It’s ‘not just tea and sandwiches’ – women from coal mining areas speak out about supporting the striking pit workers. In the East Midlands, miners’ wives talk of how the support groups were formed to combat the deprivation endured by the strikers’ families. Women from the Doe Lea Community Centre in Derbyshire discuss the effects local pit closures will have on the area, while in the centre’s kitchen they prepare meals for those in in need in their community. As they talk about their support activities, there is real anger at the media portrayal of women as being opposed to the strike, when some are out on the picket lines with their husbands. They also discuss the restrictions being placed on their areas by the increasingly visible police presence. The film excerpt includes black & white archive footage of earlier industrial disputes.
