Film following the process of rope making by hand at the workshop of William Outhwaite in Hawes, Yorkshire. After shots of women inspecting rope and bags on a stall (and a close up shot of a sign above the workshop 'Outhwaite Rope-Maker'), the film cuts to the process of making rope. Strands of yarn are hooked up to a rope making machine and twisted together. A wooden "top" is used to help bind the rope. The film ends with exterior shots of the weaving of webbing on a handloom and of the rope maker finishing a cow-tie (or halter). Film showing the work of a tannery in Silsden, Yorkshire. After shots of the tannery's village setting, hides are shown being delivered and cut into 'butts'. The butts are washed in fresh water, then placed in lime pits. After this process, the butts are scudded (hair is scraped off) and fleshed (fat is removed) by a skilled 'beamsman' before being sent to the tanning pits. OLD ENGLISH CRAFTS; OAK SPELK BASKET MAKING [WILL EVERETT] | |||

Craftsman Will Everett demonstrates the art of making an oak spelk basket in an open-air workshop at Askam-in-Furness, Cumbria. He saws a piece of oak sapling to length, splits it in two, then, using a variety of traditional tools and skills, creates thin strips of oak and a basket rim from a piece of ash. Finally, Mr Everett weaves the strips together to make an oak spelk basket as four men watch him at work. The film concludes with four women handling and admiring the completed baskets. Guests and dignitaries line up on a decorated stage constructed outside Manchester Road train station as they await the royal party. The royal train pulls into the station and the King and Queen emerge onto the decorated stage where they are introduced to a variety of guests including Sam Hanna's father, James. The King and Queen sit down and sign a book before leaving in the royal car, waving to the crowds. The film ends with shots of the crowd and a Union Jack flying above the town hall.
