[PATIENCE]

The Workington Amateur Operatic Society's 60th Anniversary production of Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Patience' in March 1966. After opening shots of the exterior of the Carnegie Theatre there are scenes inside the male and female dressing rooms as the performers prepare before making their way onstage. A technician brings up the lights and a dress rehearsal takes place in front of the producer, who is then interviewed as the performance continues. Society member Norman Wise is also interviewed in the wings and the film ends with two singers on stage. [Catalogued as part of 'Revitalising the Regions' - a Screen Heritage UK project, 2011]

Scenes featuring Manchester Italian Catholic Society Whit Friday Walk, showing people walking in procession from Ancoats to Manchester city centre. Begins with a woman with her children dressed for the Walk stood outside a terrace house, men carrying banners along the street and a young child (with Downs Syndrome) looking at the camera. Continues with the procession (including a brass band, choir boys and members of the clergy) walking down Portland Street. Footage includes men carrying religious and Madonna effigies, women dressed in traditional Italian costume and young boys wearing sashes (colours of the Italian flag).

The Duke of Edinburgh attends the opening ceremony on 7 May 1966, and the first flight, a 707 to New York, is seen taking off.

A Granada Television documentary which focuses on a sale of L. S. Lowry's paintings in London, his domestic life in Mottram in Longdendale and preoccupation with mortality. Opens with scenes of Lowry playing football with children, tallying the value of his art and working at his home The Elms. Lowry then entertains an autograph-hunting father and daughter before walking around Manchester city centre, reminiscing how it used to be. He is shown strolling through Piccadilly Gardens, speculating on how the vagrants there fell on hard times and then reflects on mortality beside graves in a cemetery. Ends with his visit to the Leferre Gallery to promote the sale of his work and his relaxing back at home again.
 
 
 
TOMORROW'S WORLD - STERILE OPERATING THEATRE

BBC Tomorrow's World production looking at the permanent sterile downward airflow enclosure, patented by Dr Hugh Howorth at Wrightington Hospital in Wigan. A presenter and voiceover explain how the new ventilation system prevents the spead of airborne infection during operations. The film also demonstrates how surgical teams have to prepare for theatre in the small enclosure space.

We then see scenes from the Grand Final Miss New Brighton Contest which took place 24 August 1966 at New Brighton Bathing Pool. The girls wear bathing costumes and parade in front of the watching crowd and the judges. There is entertainment from a brass band, and the winner is photographed with the trophy sitting on the sea wall.

The film ends with brief shots of the interior of their holiday home, Mrs. Hughes can be seen cooking some food in the kitchen.

For Steven's 3rd birthday, we see shots of his birthday cards as well as Steven playing in the garden and opening presents. The family visit Walton Park where Steven plays in the playground. They visit the pet corner and later have some ice cream. At Ainsdale beach, Steven builds sandcastles and plays with his grandparents.
