LEARNING TOGETHER – ART BY CHILDREN AND PARENTS
Date: 1999 Film Number: 12910

This short documentary is a record of a study support project organised by Manchester City Art Galleries which was held in Feb-May 1999 at the Old Parsonage, a Grade II listed building in Didsbury. A group of children from local schools, together with their parents, discovered new and experimental ways of working under the guidance of artists Janina Cebertowicz, Anneke Pelican and Susan Platt. Their work involved drawing, painting, print-making and sculpture, both inside the historic house and outside in the gardens. At the end, the children talk about the work they have produced and what they have learned from the project. This title was digitised and preserved as part of the BFI Heritage 2022 programme. A BRIGHTER FUTURE

BAMFORD UNCOVERED
Date: 1999 Film Number: 12912

A film made in millennium year by Year 6 primary school pupils from Bamford in Derbyshire. The village lies in the picturesque Peak District, close to the Ladybower, Derwent and Howden reservoirs. The children take the viewer around the village as they interview their headteacher, the sub-postmaster, the local GP, a farmer, a dentist, and a milk lady, amongst others, showing us a thriving community whose residents are generally content with where they live. The perennial problem of lack of facilities for young people inevitably arises, though, and we see activities organised at the Bamford Institute to try and address this problem. DEBATE OF THE AGE - THE NATIONAL PICTURE SEPT 1999
Date: 1999 Film Number: 12943

Rachel Wallace from the North West Arts Board interviews three prominent figures about the challenges to society caused by an ageing population. She speaks to Will Hutton, at this time the editor-in-chief of the Observer, Pauline Tambling from the Arts Council, and Fiona Chesterton from the BBC. Between them, they look at the effects on the economy, the risks of poverty in retirement, and the need to change public attitudes to older workers, so those of middle age and older are no longer regarded as disposable. Art and culture also come in for scrutiny, with an emphasis on the need for lifelong learning where new technology can be beneficial, and the importance of making arts provision and access wholly inclusive to all. ELTON WELL DRESSING
Date: c2000 Film Number: 12940

Elton is a small village in the Peak District National Park with historic buildings, but no history of well-dressing, a Derbyshire tradition whose beginnings are lost in the mists of time. To rectify this situation, Elton schoolchildren work on a project to bring the practice of well-dressing to their own village and start a tradition themselves. By interviewing older residents, researching the history of local wells, and producing their own designs in school workshops, the children’s communal effort creates an impressive piece of work for the well-dressing dedication ceremony, and the start of their own local tradition.
